The Foundation Trilogy: Foundation, Foundation and Empire, Second Foundation

by Isaac Asimov

Isaac Asimov is one of the most influential science fiction authors of the 20th century. With his Foundation trilogy, he created a milestone of the genre. Across three volumes, Asimov tells the story of a galactic empire and the attempt to predict – and influence – its downfall using mathematical precision, statistics, and psychology.

At the center is Hari Seldon, a mathematician who uses his science of “psychohistory” to statistically predict large-scale social developments. His prognosis: the empire will collapse into ruin. But through a scientific project – the Foundation, a scientific enclave at the edge of the galaxy – the coming chaos can be shortened from tens of thousands to just one thousand years.

Over the course of the trilogy, the Foundation faces political intrigue, power struggles, and surprising twists – all subtly guided by Seldon’s plan. Each of the three books introduces new characters and challenges: from warlike generals to mysterious mutants with dangerous abilities.

Asimov almost entirely forgoes classic action – there are no space battles or laser duels here. Instead, he impresses with his wealth of ideas, clever dialogue, and political sophistication. The books are structured in episodic form – almost like an anthology – and raise fascinating questions: How predictable is history? How much influence do individuals really have?

The books are pleasantly readable, even though the content is complex. Some elements – like the omnipresent cigarettes or the stereotypical female roles – feel outdated from today’s perspective. But the core ideas remain timeless.

A recommendation for science fiction fans who enjoy political, philosophical, and social depth. Those looking for fast-paced space battles might be disappointed.
